Diwan Plouguerneau: sprouting the Breton language with chalk tips

Committed actions like no other, that take us off the beaten track. Here's how a school on the Brittany coast is cultivating bilingualism, culture and belonging from an early age.

Diwan Plouguerneau : faire germer la langue bretonne à bout de craie | What The Web

When parents in the Pays des Abers saw that every new school year brought children from far away to be taught in Breton, they decided to take matters into their own hands. And so the idea of a Diwan school in Plouguerneau was born - to bring Breton closer to where people live, so that the language is not an obligation to travel, but a daily joy.

A place of transition, immersion and culture

Diwan Plouguerneau offers education from the very early years through to CE2, entirely immersive in Breton in the early years - a method in which French is gradually introduced. The aim is not simply to learn a minority language, but to live with it, breathe it and pass it on.

Parents mobilized, community united

This project would not have been possible on its own. Bringing people together, finding premises, convincing the commune, mobilizing families... all this required commitment, time and patience. The premises made available by the municipality, the collective effort to prepare the classes - all this bears witness to the fact that Diwan Plouguerneau is as much a civic project as an educational one.

Beyond words: a promise for the future

With around thirty pupils and two classes, Diwan Plouguerneau is not aiming for quantity, but depth. Every child who leaves our bilingual classes carries with them a renewed ability to think differently, to bring their culture to life, to be proud of their roots. It's a small seed growing in strong soil.

Which leads us to hope

Diwan Plouguerneau reminds us that preserving a language is not about looking backwards, but building a bridge between tradition and the future. This school shows that roots are not a hindrance, but a strength, and that expressing oneself in one's mother tongue from childhood opens windows onto the world. In a world where many talk but few listen, Diwan Plouguerneau provides a much-needed voice.
